Creating a compelling About page is a really important part of the design of your site and a great way to attract and engage your visitors.
You have probably seen thousands of examples of these types of pages over the years, many of them boring and cookie cutter. Not to worry! Your page(s) will be fabulous and uniquely you. Let’s talk about what your users want to see when they visit your site.
Why does this page matter?
Your About page is not a tool that brings people to your website. It is however the place where a lot of visitors are going to react to your brand and begin to form an opinion about it.
The writing process of an About Me page is really hard even for experienced writers, but you can do it and do it well!
What to Avoid….
Do not make this your autobiography.
Your life description in great detail should not be a part of this page. Your About page should stay simple and short.
No long and boring stories
The story of a brand can be really exciting but it’s often hard for readers to find the time to read a lot of text. You want to be short and concise and allow people to get to know you quickly!
Must Have Elements!
Basic Info
Your website visitors expect to see the most important information about your personality at the very start. Do not write your name, job title and location first thing. One of the ways to add some personality is to describe something about yourself while sharing the basic info. For example: Hi, I’m Henderson, founder of Madison Reid Creative living in North Carolina. I am a momma to 3 crazy little boys and 2 sweet doggies!
Feel Free to Brag a Little
This is a great spot to talk about your experience and why you are the right fit for them. Give yourself compliments and share examples from your prior work or activities.
The Way You Work
Here you can share not only the way you work but also your overall style, approach and any non-negotiables.
Testimonials
While you can have a separate page for your testimonials, you can also place them (or a few of them!) right on your About page. Testimonials are one of the most important ways you can demonstrate your expertise to a reader or /potential customer.
Additional Media
Pictures and video are an amazing way to present yourself to your audience. Use pictures that represent your personality and show you as the ambassador of your brand.
Call-to-Action
Within the page, you should direct the readers to some sort of action that you want them to do. Examples may be subscribing to your newsletter or setting up a free discovery call to learn more about your business
Contact Information
There should be a contact form along with ways for people to get in touch with you (phone, direct email, etc.). You can also link out to your Contact page if you have one for your site.
Remember the purpose for this page!
it is about your potential readers and customers. The main purpose should be to relate you or your brand to a reader. Approach creating this page using the lens of what would I want to know or see if I was to visit this site as a potential customer or reader?
